SUMMER SKIN TIPS AND FACTS

  1. SUNSCREEN SHOULD BE APPLIED 15-20 MINUTES BEFORE GOING OUT INTO THE SUN AND REAPPLIED EVERY 1 ½ -2 HOURS AND AFTER BEING WET AND/OR SWEATING.
  2. THE AMOUNT OF SUNSCREEN THAT WOULD FIT INSIDE A SHOTGLASS IS THE AMOUNT THAT SHOULD BE USED TO COVER YOUR ENTIRE BODY.
  3. DAILY USE OF SUNSCREEN BY ADULTS UNDER AGE 55 CAN SLOW SKIN AGING.
  4. PEOPLE WHO USE SUNSCREEN DAILY SHOW 24% LESS SKIN AGING THAN THOSE WHO DO NOT USE SUNSCREEN DAILY.
  5. USE A TOPICAL VITAMIN C CREAM DAILY – IT IS A POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANT THAT HELPS DAMAGED SKIN RECOVER AND CAN PROTECT IT FROM FUTURE DAMAGE. VITAMIN C ALSO PROTECTS AGAINST DAMAGING UVA AND UVB RAYS.
  6. AVOID THE SUN DURING THE TIME WHEN THE RAYS ARE THE STRONGEST-USUALLY BETWEEN 10AM AND 4PM.
  7. PROTECT YOUR EYES FROM THE DAMAGING RAYS OF THE SUN BY WEARING SUNGLASSES.  A GOOD PAIR OF SUNGLASSES WILL PROTECT BOTH THE SKIN AROUND THE EYE AND THE EYE ITSELF. CHOOSE SUNGLASSES THAT PROTECT AGAINST BOTH UVA AND UVB RAYS.
  8. DON’T FORGET TO PROTECT YOUR SCALP! WEAR A WIDE-BRIMMED HAT. THIS HAS THE ADDED BENEFIT OF PROTECTING YOUR FACE AND SHOULDERS AS WELL.
  9. USE AN UMBRELLA TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM INTENSE SUN’S RAYS.

CHILDREN:

  1. PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN!   …..   INFANTS 0-6 MONTHS OLD ARE TOO LITTLE FOR SUNSCREEN. THEIR SKIN IS VERY SENSITIVE AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE EXPOSED TO THE SUN AND/OR SHOULD BE KEPT OUT OF THE SUN ESPECIALLY DURING PEAK SUN HOURS- 10AM-4PM.   START USING SUNSCREEN ON YOUR CHILDREN WHEN OVER THE AGE OF 6 MONTHS.
  1. YOUR CHILDREN ALSO NEED TO WEAR SUNGLASSES NOT JUST FOR THE CUTENESS FACTOR BUT TO PROTECT THEIR DELICATE EYES!    IF THEY HELP TO PICK THEM OUT THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO WEAR THEM.       JUST MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE “KID-PROOF”.  FRAMES SHOULD BE FLEXIBLE, SCRATCH PROOF AND IMPACT RESISTANT BUT NOT BREAKABLE.

TREATING SUNBURN:

  1. KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED WITH PLENTY OF FLUIDS
  2. TAKE A SHOWER/BATH IN TEPID WATER
  3. USE A NON GREASY MOISTURIZER TO SOOTHE THE AREA
  4. TAKE AN OVER THE COUNTER ANTI-INFLAMMATORY LIKE IBUPROFEN IF NOT MEDICALLY CONTRAINDICATED.  THIS WILL HELP TO REDUCE ANY INFLAMMATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE SUNBURN AND REDUCE THE PAIN AS WELL.
  5. SOME HOME REMEDIES INCLUDE:

SKIM MILK COMPRESS-DAMPEN A CLOTH WITH SKIM, REST IT ON THE BURNED SPOTS. THE COOLNESS TAKES OUT THE INITIAL FIRE AND THE MILK PROTEIN THEN HELPS TO EASE THE RESULTING DISCOMFORT.

TAKE AN OATMEAL BATH- ADD ½ CUP OATMEAL TO A BATH.  THIS WILL HELP TO REDUCE ANY SWELLING AND IF THERE IS ANY ITCHING PRESENT, THIS MAY HELP TO REDUCE IT.

APPLY A LAYER OF ALOE VERA GEL TO THE BURN AND REAPPLY AS NECESSARY.
